The Beauty of Data - Polar
What if we could turn the hidden and abstract patterns of our lives into beautiful works of art? Unleashing the power of Polar Ignite 3,
we ignited a global campaign, transforming ugly raw data into mesmerizing works of art. Together with data artist and artificial intelligence expert
Kirell Benzi and motion graphics studio Racecar we captured the unique energy patterns and circadian rhythms of three individuals,
converting their lives into visually captivating narratives.
.
Polar traditionally targets die-hard runners and athletes. However, with the launch of Ignite 3, their goal was to appeal to a lifestyle-oriented, particularly female, audience. Although the unique circadian rhythm tools of Ignite 3 served as an attractive selling point, our understanding was that raw running and rhythm data, while valuable, often lacks visual appeal, especially to those who are not avid trainers.
We gathered vast data from three diverse individuals: a pilot, an office worker, and an agriculturist. Over eight days, we accumulated sleep patterns, activity levels, and all data that can be captured with Ignite 3.
The three of them wore their Polar watches day and night to track all their activity, workouts, and sleep. The watch captured every beat of their heart, their daily step count and calorie consumption, their wake and bedtimes, how much they sleep and how much time they spent in each sleep stage. Everything they did produced data. After eight days, Dr. Benzi had a tremendous amount of data points (more than 2 million) that would soon be transformed into three unique art pieces.
Knowing how abstract science can sometimes be, this project aimed to translate opaque data into appealing artworks that speak to us. To perform better in life and work, you must find your own rhythm.
With help of artificial intelligence, this data was then processed into a circular artwork reflecting each person's unique rhythm and lifestyle - encouraging them to see their lifestyle as a beautiful, evolving piece of art.
